What becomes possible when someone has a stable place to call home?
A child has a familiar place to wake up.
A senior can remain in the community they know.
A family has a kitchen table to gather around.
A renter can exhale.
A homeowner can make the repair that allows them to stay.
Housing touches nearly every part of life—health, safety, family stability, independence, work, education, and our ability to participate in community.
And yet, conversations about housing can quickly become numbers, programs, waiting lists, policies, and assumptions.
At our September Purpose Forum, we’re exploring the human side of housing—what stability, dignity, and a place to call home can make possible.
On Wednesday, September 30, Scott Aker, CEO of the Grand Junction Housing Authority, and Emilee Powell, Executive Director of Housing Resources of Western Colorado, will join us for:
Room to Thrive: The Human Side of Housing
Scott and Emilee bring two complementary windows into housing in the Grand Valley—from affordable rentals and housing assistance to homeownership, repairs, education, counseling, and the many pathways that help people remain rooted in community life.
Scott and Emilee will share brief perspectives from their work, followed by table reflections and audience questions about the everyday impact of housing stability—with practical ideas you may be able to put into practice in your own community life.
Because having room to thrive is about more than shelter.
It is about dignity.
Belonging.
Stability.
And the possibility of building a life.

Remembering Dolly Parton — an original force for goodness
Dolly Parton first gave the world her music—songs full of humor, heartbreak, resilience, and unmistakable humanity.
She also showed what generosity looks like when it becomes a way of moving through the world: lifting people up, opening doors, and turning success into possibility for others.
Her Imagination Library is one of the most inspiring examples. Here in Mesa County, Horizon Sunrise Rotary Club of Grand Junction stepped in to help revive the program, keeping free books flowing to local children.
A beautiful reminder that goodness grows when someone starts something—and others choose to carry it forward.

Local Act of Goodness
Each month, we’ll highlight simple yet powerful acts of generosity happening across the Grand Valley—because community health grows through everyday contributions.
💚 When $100 becomes $29,500
The Giving Club is a beautiful example of generosity multiplying around a room. Nearly 300 local women gather quarterly, each pledging $100, then hear brief pitches for three Mesa County nonprofits and vote on where their collective gift will go. The club has now donated more than $1 million to 40 local nonprofits.
In August, members selected The Joseph Center, founded by former Purpose Forum speaker Mona Highline, for a collective gift of $29,500+.
A vivid reminder that one check may feel small—but when 295 people place theirs on the same table, something much bigger becomes possible.

Want to Know What's Happening Before a Decision Is Made?
You don't have to wait until a decision is made to find out what's happening in county government.
Mesa County's Sunshine List is one way residents can stay informed about upcoming public meetings. When you sign up, you'll receive notices about meetings involving the Board of County Commissioners where public business is discussed, and action may be taken.
Why does that matter?
Knowing about meetings ahead of time gives you an opportunity to follow issues that matter to you, review meeting agendas and decide whether you want to attend or provide input.
The Sunshine List is only one way to stay informed. Residents can also review meeting agendas and supporting materials online, attend public hearings in person or watch meetings online.
Being involved in local government starts with knowing what's happening. These tools make it easier to follow county decisions before they are made.

With the November election approaching, Mesa County Elections is notifying some voters whose voter record may need an updated signature.
Signatures are an important part of the mail ballot verification process. If you receive a notice from Mesa County Elections, follow the instructions to update your signature.
